WORI (Women Rights Initiative Uganda)
Get to Know Us
The Nyonga Women's Shelter is the cornerstone project of the human rights program of the Women Rights Initiative WORI is a women's prosperity charity based in Eastern Uganda in the beautiful city of Jinja. Created in 2007 to respond to the challenges facing women’s rights, alleviate poverty, promote awareness of sexual reproductive health and rights, and build leadership and governance capacity at a grassroots level.

Our Services

Psychosocial support is the process of facilitating and strengthening resilience within women, families and communities to recover from critical scenarios with potentially damaging long-term impacts. Our psychosocial support promotes the restoration of social cohesion between men, women and families in Uganda.
Legal Aid
This section helps women with legal advice ; providing legal aid services and legislative sensitizations through organizing community-based education, media and documenting and summarizing relevant Ugandan legislation in the media to create awareness about rights, obligations and implications for the general public.

Nyonga Skilling Initiative
We offer skills training to empower survivors and foster economic independence. Participants can choose from various sessions, designed to be efficient for those with limited time. Eligible individuals receive start-up kits, while non-resident survivors benefit from baskets or cash transfers to support their livelihoods.

Survivor Stories of Resilience
The shelter aims to provide a protective and empowering environment to respond to holistically respond to the needs of women and girl survivors of gender based violence within the Jinja district and Busoga region as a whole.
Anonymous
This is the story of an anonymous minor who was sexually abused by her stepfather. After falling pregnant with her stepfathers child she was shunned by her family and community. Finding a space of refuge at the Nyonga Shelter she had the opportunity to learn new skills to equip her for her future and has a supportive community to guide her.
Nangobi Sarah
Nangobi Sarah found safety at the Nyonga Shelter and through counselling, guidance and training on skills like sewing she regained stability. With her new sewing machine and newfound confidence she is able to support her 6 children financially. Her message is one of hope and encouragement.

This survivor shares her story of escaping abuse and finding safety at the Nyonga Shelter.​
From her stay at the shelter rebuilt her confidence through trauma councelling, legal support and practical training skills. Today She is rebuilding her life with her new skills and community support.
